Luther South: Education for the mind and spirit. College Preparatory High School and Junior High School
Academics : Graduation Requirements

Twenty-four credits are required for graduation beginning with the freshman class of 2004-05; with possible exceptions granted to transfer students. A unit of credit is offered for a subject taught for five periods per week throughout one school year. Courses offered for one semester gain ½ credit. Courses offered for a quarter gain ¼ credit. Exceptions occur in physical education, which receives approximately ¼ credit for a semester, and in music, where Concert and Symphonic Band and Mixed Chorus receive ½ credit for a full year.

The twenty-four credits required for graduation must include:

  • 4 in theology,
  • 4 in English,
  • 3 in social studies,
  • 3 in mathematics,
  • 3 in science,
  • 1 in physical education,
  • ½ credit in health,
  • 1 full credit in computer skills beginning in 2003-2004
  • In addition, ½ credit in a course designated for consumer education. Examples are General Business, Business Law or Economics.

One semester of fine arts is required for students entering in the freshman year and for transfer students. Junior level students are required to take an ACT Prep class to aid them in taking the ACT test

The State of Illinois requires passing a test on the U.S. and Illinois Constitutions before graduation (Public Law 195).

Six classes or a combination of Six credits (including physical education and theology) constitute the minimum number of credits for each year of attendance. The senior year must be taken at Luther High School South for a Luther South diploma to be issued.

In order to participate in the graduation ceremony, a student must, by the end of the 7th semester, be scheduled for enough credits to meet all graduation requirements. The 8th Semester coursework must receive credit to be accepted; however, if necessary, the student may be allowed to take courses in night school, if a student fails any 8th semester courses which are necessary for graduation the diploma will be withheld until proper credit has been earned.

Students must attend Luther South 3 out of 4 years to be eligible to be the Valedictorian or the Salutatorian of their graduating class. Exceptions may be allowed at the discretion of the Administration, if a student’s previous high school closed or parents’ job required student to move.
