The social studies department gives students opportunities to learn about their world through involvement with geography, history, economics, and government. Social studies classes are designed to increase the students' understanding of the past, the world around them, the heritage of our nation, and to help them become informed citizens. Students develop the ability to think critically about issues and value systems.

Class Listing

Three units of credit in social studies are required for graduation. Students are permitted to select additional courses in the various social studies.


Students will register for at least one year of social studies during their freshman or sophomore year (Geography or World History). One unit of U.S. History is required of juniors and seniors will take Economics, African-American History, Government or Current Issues.


714 Geography I

This course introduces students to the principles of geography focusing on how people relate to climate, various landforms, natural resources, and the seven seas. The focus is on the Western Hemisphere, where the high standard of living in the well-developed English-speaking America contrasts with the underdeveloped areas of Latin America.

This course continues with the study of Europe and Russia, where the use of natural resources led to the development of the globe’s most advanced industrial civilizations. The emphasis will be areas in the eastern hemisphere, namely Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, which consist of new nations bound by their old cultures. Undeveloped resources, food shortages, political instability, and population are problems of many of these nations.

Beginning with the great civilizations of the world, including Egypt, Greece, Rome, as well as those in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. The course continues into the Middle Ages in Europe and other parts of the world, including the ages of the Renaissance, Reformation, exploration, and absolute monarchs.

This course focuses on the development of and the conflicts among various political systems following the French Revolution and continuing through World Wars One and Two. Highlighted will be the growth of democracy, nationalism, and imperialism in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America, including the influence of communism and dictatorship on the developing nations of the world.


736 United States History I

We follow the development of our nation from pre-colonial times through the Revolution and the establishment of our republic and its democratic government. The study ends with the Civil War and the resulting period of Reconstruction. The state-mandated examination on the United States and Illinois Constitutions, which students must pass in order to graduate, is given during this course.


737 United States History II

Required

The study begins with the 1870’s at a time when the United States begins to develop its modern character, influenced by industrialization, immigration, and the last continental frontier. The entire 20th Century is covered, including our participation in the World Wars resulting in our emergence from isolationism to our rise as a world power.


740 African: American History

This course is designed to explore the heritage and history of Americans of African descent, both in Africa and in the United States, in greater detail than is possible in the traditional U.S. History courses. It is intended as an elective for students of any race or ethnic group.

"Everything you wanted to know about economics but didn't know how/what to ask." Such topics as scarcity and choice, supply and demand, perfect and imperfect competition, production and income, government finance and fiscal policy, inflation, and unemployment are covered in this introduction to economics. This course may be used to fulfill the consumer education requirement.

Empowerment! How does government happen? Who has the power? Who shares the power? What events and groups can make power shift? How much power does the citizen/voter really have? Students will look at the three branches of government as well as the citizen voter, the media, political parties and other influences on government in an effort to answer the question: How can I as an ordinary citizen get government to act on my concerns in my neighborhood, district, and state?
