And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues."

Getting to the "core" of the student

Our integrated core curriculum assures that all students study the essentials. Each year all students study the Word of God, math, literature, composition & grammar, and Christian wellness (physical education & health). Students also receive instruction in science, social studies, a foreign language, music, art, and computer training.

An integrated curriculum ensures that each class relates to the learning environment and to the rest of the curriculum. Each course builds on those that precede it. Since our curriculum is college preparatory, any student who fullfills our graduation requirements has also met the requirements to be accepted into colleges and universities throughout the United States. Throughout our courses our faculty emphasizes faith in God and student spiritual life.

Unique Features

Our curriculum incorporates ‘authentic assessment assignments’: methods that lead students to think critically and apply learned information beyond the classroom. You will find a more thorough description of authentic assessment in our Senior Project.

Block Scheduling

Luther South has an eight period schedule. On Mondays all periods meet for 35 minutes. On Tuesdays and Thursdays the first four periods meet in block schedule format and on Wednesdays and Fridays the last four periods meet in block schedule. This schedule provides students more time and flexibility to meet all their academic requirements and still have room in their schedule for many electives. Block scheduling provides students with greater opportunities for cooperative learning, alternative assessments, and problem based learning to supplement more traditional teaching methods to make the curriculum challenging for the student.

College Preparatory

Luther High School South offers courses in logical sequence in a number of fields of study. Our school is college preparatory. We advise students intending to continue their education in a college or university to choose primarily college preparatory subjects in areas such as English, mathematics, science, languages, and social studies. They will also have an opportunity to enrich their study with electives.

University Requirements

Student should note that Illinois (public) colleges and universities require the following for admission: four years of English, three of mathematics, three of laboratory science, three of social studies, and two of foreign language, art or music.

Transfer Students

Students who transfer to Luther South from another high school need to earn 1/2 credit in theology each semester they are enrolled at Luther South. They do not have to make up theology credits for the time they were at another school. Transfer students must fulfill the fine arts requirement (at least one semester of music or art) and one full year of computer skills.
